Collection: Rattan & Steel Dining Chairs

Dining chairs built on the Japandi principle that a chair should disappear when you are not looking at it and hold you properly when you are. Our range runs from hand-woven rattan cane on a chrome cantilever base to brushed and panelled stainless steel, all with the low backs and clean lines that keep a dining room feeling open rather than crowded.

A dining chair is the piece of furniture in your home that gets the hardest use and the least thought. It is worth getting right.

Choosing dining chairs

Seat height is the number that matters. Standard dining tables sit at 74 to 76cm, and a chair seat between 45 and 47cm gives comfortable clearance. Check this before anything else, because a beautiful chair at the wrong height is unusable.

Allow 60cm of table width per person so elbows are not competing. For a round table, four chairs is the comfortable maximum at 100cm diameter.

Rattan and cane keep a room visually light, which helps in smaller spaces. Steel reads more architectural and stands up better to daily use with children.

Rattan, cane or wicker?

You will also see these sold as wicker dining chairs. Wicker is a weave, not a material, so a hand-woven cane chair is a wicker chair in the true sense: the frame is rattan and hardwood, the seat and back are woven natural cane. Ours are the indoor kind, natural fibre rather than the synthetic resin used for garden sets, which is what keeps them looking warm under artificial light.
