Our Japandi sofas and lounge chairs sit closer to the floor than most British furniture, which is the single change that makes a ceiling feel higher and a room feel larger. Linen upholstery, hand-woven rattan cane and solid timber frames, in a palette that stays out of the way.

The Japandi approach to seating borrows the Japanese preference for low, grounded furniture and the Scandinavian insistence that it still has to be comfortable at the end of a long day. Down-filled cushions, generous seat depths, nothing that looks better than it sits.

Choosing a sofa or lounge chair

Measure the room before the sofa. Leave at least 75cm of walkway around seating, and 40 to 45cm between a sofa and a coffee table so you can reach a cup without leaning.

Linen creases. That is what linen does, and it is why the fabric ages well rather than wearing out. If creasing bothers you, a rattan or timber-framed chair will hold its shape indefinitely.
